I’ve been pretty busy lately; work has been killer, sailing once or twice a week, doing kid stuff, home refinancing, and BUYING OUR FIRST CRUISING BOAT. I didn’t want to jinx it by putting anything in the blog, but I’m now, officially, a cruiser.
Does this mean I have to learn how to sail with a martini in one hand and the jib leech flogging violently?

She is lovely. Now we need to come up with a name. Any ideas? Adele is her current name (after the previous owner’s grandmother), but David would like something more snazy. Some of the forerunners are Fandango, Bonfire, Schitznitz, Shen-Lung (chinese dragon - good luck), Firefly (Serenity reference), and a number of Lord of the Rings/Star Trek references. Adele made a Transatlantic crossing in 2004 for the Olympics, here’s the website if you’re interested(http://www.wallstreetcaterers.com/greece2004/Atlantic%20Crossing.cfm?Cat=Departure).

Congratulations! What kind of boat is she?

Caliber 40. We were very lucky to get it at a price we can afford. It’s gonna be kind of tight in the Bethancourt household for a while…

Your boat looks beautiful. Laurie and I also have a Caliber 40 LRC #162 named “Rapture”. We have been very happy with the boat and currently have it in the Club Nautique fleet at Ballena Bay. I would like to do some cruising but Laurie is not so sure she wants to go in the ocean. What are your plans, if I may ask, and where are you keeping your Caliber?

I’m not sure what my hull number is. The hull id# is CYQ04053G293. It’s a 1993 boat, so we don’t get the LRC designation. The boat is currently in Florida, but we’re trucking her to Houston, Texas where we will begin preparing her for long term cruising.
Get Laurie racing! I introduced my wife to sailboat racing 6 years ago, and now she thinks she wants to cross the Atlantic.

I think our hull number is 126.

Racing was excellent for me, but Laurie may need to learn from someone other than her husband. It took David and I years to figure out that one, with lots and lots of fights. I should have gotten experience on my own and then raced with him to feel like I was contributing not just doing as I was told. Now I am racing with David in the J/22s and international women’s events and having a blast. And, yes, I do want to do a transalantic crossing in my caliber!

What’s its PHRF rating? You won’t be able to resist.

The PHRF rating is 126 or so. He will be able to resist! We are doing races only as offshore training, heavily weighed down.

27 hours and 39 minutes - the precise amount of time until someone asked what it rated.
I would have lost that bet. I figured it would be less than 24 hours.
