Don’t Call It a Comeback

Filed under: Sailing — DavidB @ 1:33 am

I raced a sailboat in 2007. Twice. My back has improved as much as it ever will, and I’m beginning to get my racing groove back on. We did the HYC Revognah, on my J/22, with 5 people. It’s amazing how much you can slow down a J/22 by being only 400 pounds over maximum legal J/22 weight. Then then GBCA Icicle #1 on Mike’s Olson the following weekend.

Half my sailing friends are in Key West right now. Sure wish I was there…

Dying Snowmen

Filed under: Family & Friends — DavidB @ 2:23 am

While spending time in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this year, my two precocious children had an opportunity to each build a snowman. With some help from Grandma, we’ve monitored the progress of these fine creations through several thaws and a light snow.

The construction of the snoman begins. You can see that, here in the early construction phase, the kids appear to be doing everything properly. They’ve rolled the snowman’s bottom section through nearby snow to achieve a strong, round, shape for the base. So far, so good.

The finished product. My young son, Sam, is especially proud of his snowman, the one on the left. You begin to see some potential problems in this picture. The head of Sam’s snowman is incredibly small. Chesea seems to have left her snowman’s base and torso a bit skinny to support the massive head. Not engineers. My kids.

And now the results of the first thaw. Sam’s snowman seems to be collapsing in on itself, while Chelsea’s snowman has developed a distinct list to port.

The snowmen in this picture are near death. The leftmost snowman is turning into a snow fire hydrant. The rightmost snowman is only keeping its’ head because of a very thick neck.

One head has fallen to the ground. The other has melted away.

Oh! The humanity!
